First identify the saddle and finish
Find the maker, model and current care instructions before choosing a product. Take a photograph of the label if you need to ask the maker or saddler for advice. Leather, suede, synthetic sections and attached accessories may need different methods.
There is no single soap routine for every saddle. Albion describes sparing use of its leather soap followed, once dry, by its balm. Kent & Masters tells owners not to use spray soap, glycerine saddle soap or oil-based soap on its saddles. Those instructions should not be blended into a universal recipe.
Prepare the workspace
Set the saddle on a stable support and put the instructions where you can read them. Gather the specified products and separate cloths before starting. Keep removed parts and used cloths separate from tack that is ready to use.
Work through the maker's method in order. Take the opportunity to look at seams, straps and attachments while they are visible. If you see damage, put the item aside and ask your saddler; cleaning does not restore a failed structural part.
Record the routine that applies to your saddle
| Write down | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Instruction page and date | Makes it easy to check for changes |
| Approved product and finish | Avoids confusing similar bottles |
| Separate instructions for accessories | Stops one method being used on everything |
| Concern and action required | Helps the next user avoid using damaged kit |
For differences between cleaning and conditioning products, read soap, balm and oil. For non-leather surfaces, use the synthetic saddle guide.
Storage won't fix a saddle that doesn't fit. Have your saddle checked by a qualified saddle fitter (Society of Master Saddlers register), especially after it's been stored for a long time.
Damaged, mouldy or stiff tack can rub or break. Check stitching and leather before every ride, and ask your saddler or vet if your horse shows soreness.
